More Info: A perennial found usually in sandy or rocky, acid soil in open woods, thinly wooded slopes, thickets and clearings. The stems grow from 2 to 5", are hairy and bear alternate stemless single-veined narrow dark green leaves with smooth or hairy margins and pointed tips. The leaves are 1 to 4" long and smell like licorice when crushed. The flowers are golden yellow, and densely crowded in branched clusters at the tops of the stems. The individual blossoms are arranged in rows along the upper sides of the flower head branchlets.
